Description

About the Book :

This book has been written for B.Pharm. students of Indian universities. Though a number of laboratory manuals are available in the market, what makespractical handbook of pharmaceutical organic chemistry” stand apart is the simple and user friendly presentation of the material. This book not only provides the accurate and practical procedures for all experiments, but it also explains the principle and rationale behind each experiment. The handbook attempts to cover all the experiments generally prescribed in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry syllabi right from the qualitative analysis to chromatographic methods.

This handbook has been written in such a way that the students, at the end of an experiment would be able to answer questions mentioned in each chapter. Appendix contains Glossary, explaining commonly used terms in organic chemistry and procedures for preparation of important reagents useful in qualitative analysis.

Content :

Chapter 1 lists the importance of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and describes the various grades of chemicals used in organic chemistry labs and also the safety instructions for handling these.

Chapter 2 deals with the safety aspects and the common accidents that are encountered along with the first aid treatment for such cases.

Chapter 4 describes the technique for determination of physical constants.

In Chapter 6, principles behind the commonly performed organic qualitative tests have been explained along with simple chemical equations.

Chapter 7 gives the step by step strategy involved in identification of an organic sample. Preparation of derivatives is an important step in identification of an organic compound. This chapter contains simple procedures for preparing them along with their structures.

Separation of binary mixtures has been dealt with in Chapter 8.

Syntheses of organic compounds have been covered from chapters 9 to 19. Efforts have been taken to explain the mechanism involved in these synthesis in a simple manner.

Chapters 37 to 44 deal with quantitative estimations of various functional groups of organic compounds. In these chapters a detailed explanation of the principles behind the procedures involved and preparation of reagents required in the procedures has been given.

Chapters 45 to 51 are devoted to analysis of oils and fats while Chapters 50 and 51 deal with chromatographic separation of mixtures of two compounds.
