In Pune’s busy Appa Balwant Chowk stands a bookshop that
sowed the seeds of what is today a $5 million conglomerate. Pragati Group.
It was in the year 1974 that Mr. Dinesh Furia, Founder, Pragati Group
set up a bookshop to fulfill his dream of serving the academic community. The
mission was to provide students with a vast and varied range of educational/
reference material under one roof. The strategic choice of location, the vast
range of books and stationery and friendly customer service, soon transformed
into one of the most visited and renowned bookshops in Pune.
This small bookstore was where Pragati Prakashan (the first
publishing venture of the Group) was established and nourished. So was
Nirali Prakashan, a specialist textbook publisher that caters to school, college and
postgraduate level students in various streams.
Apart from being a surefire source of textbooks and reference materials
from the publishing subsidiaries of the Group, Pragati Book Center also distributes titles and products
published by other publishers. This is in line with its mission to provide indiscriminate service
to students. A single-minded approach that has resulted in Pragati Book Center being recognized as
a full-range academic supplier in its own right. In addition to the sales aspect, it is also
a potent tool for the Group’s continuous market research and has been an important constituent
of the Group’s successful publication strategies till date.
Pragati Book Center is presently a chain of 5 fully owned bookstores in Pune and Mumbai. In addition to this, Pragati Book Center has developed over the years an intricate network of book distributors throughout India. This has helped Pragati Books Pvt. Ltd. (formerly Pragati Prakashan) and Nirali Prakashan. to reach beyond the metro borders into fast developing academic markets. Thanks to the round-the-year buyers/friendly promotional activities, Pragati Book Center attracts learners from all fields across all ages.
